Field trip to Mars

The goal of this project was to take students on a virtual trip to Mars so that they would be inspired to pursue careers in engineering and science.

they took a school bus and equipped the windows with 4K transparent LCDS that could work as the display. The planned out route in DC and then projected a map to see if the course was correct and matched up.

They used Nasa for Mars reference but the environment wasn't too engaging so they also used the Martian as reference and mixed them both together to get the realism and more embellished parts. As well as the environment they had timed events like sandstorms that would interact with the bus.

The next issue was tracking and latency. They tried all kinds of sensors to get the data like a 3 axis sensor and Something like GPS to get a broad position of where the bus is in the city. The latency was key as if they were out of sync it could cause motion sickness. At the back of the bus there were two powerful PC's that were doing the streaming and latency.
