Engaging the player.

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

Premise

The premise is usually the first thing that a perspective player will come across when the learn about your game so making sure that you have something interesting to draw them in like basing your game on an popular existing IP or having innovations that diversify gameplay and the players experience. For example in Spider-Man ps4 you play as Spider-Man in New York where you swing around stopping crimes and the sinister six and this a very exciting premise that drew in and still brings people in.

Character

An engaging character is just as important as gameplay as they are the person that you experience the game through so having a character you can relate to is what makes characters so beloved take the God of war series and the main character Kratos where the first 3 games were released between 2005 and 2010 where Kratos wanted the get revenge on the gods who done him ill and the series laid dormant until in 2016 a teaser for the 2018 was released at E3 and this got a huge reaction not because it was a new PlayStation game but due to it being the return of a fan favorite character that people loved.

Challenge

Challenge adds conflict to a game without out it players can fast and easily speed thought the game which doesn't give a satisfying feeling when you complete a game especially in combat based games where there should be a level of challenge for the player. For example people play dark souls for the challenging combat and whenever they beat a hard boss they get rewarded with a new item to help further on in the game.

Play

Different types of play is important as this can affect things like the demographic of the game as people have different play preferences/styles. People may like playing a ranked version of your game so creating a causal and ranked playlist so each player can get their desired experience rainbow six siege does this well. Play can also mean the environment that the player is put in when the experience the game take the Witcher 3 it has a very large and beautiful map that the player gets to take in when they travel objective to objective.

Story

For story based games story matters significantly more than story in a multiplayer game like Rocket league. A story is what makes a player want to progress and uncover more about it, it is also what helps the player get to know the character and relate to them if the story speaks to them. God of war whilst action packed and cinematic also has a very emotional story of father and son trying to fulfil Kratos's wife last request and have her ashes spread on the highest mountain in all 9 realms. This is the character motivation for why Kratos is doing what he is doing.
