comparative study of developers approach to developing games with diversity/inclusion

Updated: Jan 28, 2021

In Horizon zero dawn you plays as Aloy who is an outcast from a society in the future for being suspected of not being born of a human mother. Whilst this game has a female lead it doesn't focus on the fact Aloy is a female lead instead it focuses on Aloy trying to uncovering her past and find her place in a very engaging narrative that is set in a machine and overgrown dominated world that never accepted her. The story and gameplay both get shaken up over the course of the game to give Aloy the depth that the lead for AAA game like this would need. In 2019 (two years after its release) Horizon zero dawn had sold over 10 million copies and in 2020 it got a re-release for PC which also led to a boost in sales. Horizon zero dawn is a testament to what can be achieved with a good narrative and gameplay mechanics which is important in giving players a character that they can enjoy playing as. However game such like Mortal Kombat have an issue with how they dress their female male characters as they tend to dress them in clothing that is too revealing and far from practical. They only really rely on the player wanting to see how this female character is dressed as opposed to wanting to play them because they are a relatable and or likeable character.
