ATV match move shot

Updated: May 24, 2021

To start the shot i convert the plate into a image sequence and brought into my script where i used the distortion grid to undistort my footage. Next i moved to tracking within the tracking node i inputted the camera details like focal length and sensor size in order to get a more accurate track after i had my track and solve i did some manual and automatic track clean up so that i get a better solve error for my track. I then set my ground plane and origin so that i can orient my scene. I then used the point cloud generator node to get a reconstruction of the scene however an issue i did face was that they reconstruction came out as black circles that did still represent the scene but had no texture. I played around with setting to get it to normal and even ask for help from a compositor but it still wouldn't work however after a while it fixed itself so then i could get a cube and scale and position it to act as proxy geo for the bed of the ATV. Now i had a good track i used a write geo node to export out the proxy geo and camera data ready for Maya.

Before i could start in Maya i had to create a HDRI, i was provided with 3 images of the left and right side of a chrome ball at 3 different exposures i combine each side using photoshops HDR feature one issue was that one side was darker than the other but after redoing it they were both the same. The next thing i had to do was patch out the on set crew so that they wouldn't effect the lighting this took time but eventually got done so i can export them. I took the exported images into nuke and so that i can combine them into a usable HDRI using the spherical transform node. Now when i use a exposure node and decrease or increase it the image still retains its highlights.

Now that i have my HDRI i can open the camera data in Maya and create a image background so i have my footage for reference. I then altered the proxy geo to have the proper shape of a truck bed. I then populated the ATV bed with quixel megascan assets like crated and jerry can so that my shot would have a military transport look to it.
